Aaniin! Hello Everyone!
As a child, I never wanted to stay inside the lines, and I guess I'm still there today. I always wanted to be heard and seen but was to shy to go there. Art has given me an avenue to express myself and the pieces that I have created are linked to my heritage, culture and people. I feel that when I stare at these faces, I am connecting to the past. In some way, these faces could be my ancestors coming out through me.
My mother, Marie, was born on Manitoulin Island. Our family routes come from a reserve called Wikwemikong, which is on the east side of the island. My greatgrandfather's Native name is Niganigijig. I will try to honour him and my ancestors by using our true name.
My knowledge in Ojibway vocabulary is limited, so I have done the best I can to express myself in our language. If I have misspelled or placed words out of context I have done so innocently and I apologize.
Meegwaetch Friends,
Niganigijig
